SBAC/Common Core Results -- A Little Bragging

(click on the images for a clearer view)

In 6th grade, ESUMS students are right at the state average:
By 8th grade, they've left the state far behind:
In 10th/11th grade, ESUMS is the best in the district:
Comparable to the surrounding suburbs:
Standardized tests mean very little as a measure of a school's excellence . . . but it's nice to do so well!  Conduct your own SBAC analysis at http://www.courant.com/data-desk/hc-how-did-your-school-do-on-the-sbac-20150827-htmlstory.html.

Orientation Tomorrow!

School Orientations will be held in the school cafeteria tomorrow.  Please take this opportunity to come by and say "hello" to the new PTO officers and sign up to help out during the school year.

Tomorrow would also be a good time to visit the school uniform exchange.   Most of the gently used uniform pieces available are smaller (middle school) sizes because kids grow out of them.

Donations of used -- or even new -- larger, high-school-size uniforms would be most welcome!  Uniforms from the uniform exchange are also used to provide an outfit when students come to school out of dress code.

The uniform exchange could also use some care -- volunteers to wash, iron, and fold some of the items.  Please speak to Teresa or Anna in the main office if you can take on this task.

A Great Opportunity with a Very Short Deadline (Aug. 21)

New Haven Democracy School Is Back -- Apply Now!

Starting in early September the City of New Haven will offer a nine-week course
in city government, New Haven Democracy School. The purpose of Democracy
School is to turn residents into more effective advocates for their neighborhoods
and communities by giving them a holistic picture of how city government really
functions. Students will meet department heads and public safety officials, look
deeper into the city's budget, tour the Emergency Operations Center, and network
with other engaged residents from all over the city.
This is an invaluable opportunity to develop new tools for becoming a more
effective activist and organizer in your community.

Here's an article about a previous version of Democracy School

Applications are due August 21. Eligibility is limited to New Haven residents 18years and older, and only 25 students will be accepted. Classes will meet onThursday evenings from 5:30-8:00pm beginning September 3 and goingthrough November 5.
