This article lays out the issues.  Members of the Board of Education have provisionally voted for Dr. Carol Birks from the Hartford Public Schools, while public opinion has widely preferred Gary Highsmith or Dr. Pamela Brown.

If you are motivated to become involved in the issue before the final vote at Monday night's Board of Education meeting (11/20, 5:30 pm, LW Beecher School, Jewel St.), you can sign a petition or attend a press conference, Sunday at noon on the steps of City Hall.

Walkathon Details

From Mrs. Pennella:

Hope all is well and everyone enjoyed the weekend. I just wanted to give you an update of the plans for Wednesday. Thankfully it looks like the weather will be cooperating for us.

East Rock Park is located on the corner of Orange Street and Cold Spring. Students should be arriving around 9:45am and will follow a schedule to play at stations, including a station to "walk" around the perimeter of the stations with teachers within the fields, not outside the park.

I did not include a water/snack station but children can come anytime for water. In distributing the snacks, I think it would be easier if you bag about 25 snacks in a bag and hand to the teacher to distribute. I will give you a list of teachers to check off. There will be 4 grade level teachers in each grade 6-8. Should be 12 groups. This will avoid students coming multiple times and running out of snacks for those who choose to visit later in the morning.

We do not need parents to run any stations, but can certainly volunteer to help in that capacity if they wish.

What we really need are parents to :
pick up packed coolers from Cafeteria from Ms. Barri. ( unfortunately they do not have wheels) and distribute lunch at the park.
Water Jugs (can be filled in Cafe)
donated cups, snacks, gallons of water for refilling,( these should be in the PTO closet and/or main office)
supermarket plastic bags to distribute snacks
optional: some ice to chill water.

Lunch waves will start at 11:00,11:30, and 12:00.
there are long picnic tables and benches under the pavillion so I don't think you need tables or a tent because the area is covered by trees and the pavilion roof.

I will be at the field very early to set up games but can call me on my cell if you have any questions. 203-560-1215  Jeanne

Hopefully I didn't leave anything out. but please contact me with any concerns.

WE are so thankful for our wonderful parents who make the day possible and appreciate your flexibility.

Heads Up!! The Walkathon Has Been Rescheduled to Oct. 10 & 11

Because we cannot use the fields at UNH, the ESUMS Annual Walkathon has been postponed a week, so that we can reserve school buses.  The high school will walk down near the West Haven shore on Oct. 10, and the middle school will walk at a local park on Oct. 11.

Volunteers are needed for both days (approximately 9 -1) to hand out snacks, deliver lunches, and fill the water coolers.  Donations of snacks are also much needed.  Please follow ESUMS PTO on facebook for the latest details and feel free to contact esumspto@gmail.com with questions.

Hope to see you there!
