CPLT Summary 12/6/13

The Citywide Parent Leadership Team met tonight and sends the following information back to our PTO.

(1)  Free coats will be available for any student who needs one at the Hillhouse Field House, Saturday, Dec. 7, at 2 pm.
(2)  The parent advocacy group Teach Our Children will hold a Listening and Learning Tour session on Saturday, Dec. 7, 12:30-2:30, at 370 James Street.  Teach Our Children has a very active parent transportation committee, and ESUMS parents with transportation issues are strongly encouraged to become involved.
Teach Our Children is also willing to give a presentation about their work to our PTO.
(3)  December 9 will be a Day of Action for public schools.  The film Go Public will be shown at Career High School at 7 pm.  More information at http://aft.org/promise/
(4)  Columbus School is planning events for the spring: March 14, a bazaar, and Feb. 28, a dominoes tournament.
(5)  Speakers are available to give presentations at schools about the Affordable Care Act.
(6)  Parents are reminded that Concepts for Adaptive Learning provides free computers to families who attend a short set of computer literacy workshops.  http://www.eachchildlearns.org
(7)  The website committee has finished their work and presents the new website: http://nhpsparents.net/
(8)  Suzanne Lyons discussed some of the changes in the TAG program and is looking for parent volunteers to participate in shaping the new New Haven TAG system.
(9)  Paris Lee of the Title One Advocacy Group invited all parents to participate in their programs, because the distinction between Title One and non-Title One is arbitrary, and we all have the same concerns.  He specifically seeks involvement in redistricting, testing technology, and summer opportunities.  The Group will meet 12/12, 9:30-11, and 12/18, 6pm, at Career High School.  The latter meeting will feature Bingo and student poetry.
(10)  Recycling: parent representatives are charged to find out our home school's recycling practices, with the goal of implementing full recycling in all the schools citywide.
(11) Individual parents continued to voice specific concerns over transportation problems and the lack of school nurses.  Taskforces to address these problems have been formed, but have not yet been given time to meet during CPLT meetings.
