CPLT Meeting Summary

Summary of CPLT meeting, Jan. 9, 2014

(1)  An organization called Raise the Bar will hold a Parent Advocacy Conference in Atlanta, Jan. 24-26.  If you are interested in attending, please contact Danny Diaz (Daniel.Diaz@new-haven.k12.ct.us). The entire cost of the trip will be covered by Raise the Bar.

(2)  A parent reported that their school had won a $700 Target Field Trip Grant.  (This seems like a good idea for ESUMS).

(3)  A representative from Connecting Children and Families talked about the need for foster parents in the New Haven area.

(4)  A parent asked the CPLT to take up the issue of zero-tolerance expulsion.

(5)  A representative from the Health Department announced two enrollment events for the Affordable Care Act (health insurance) to be held at 55 Church St. on Jan.11 & 20.

(6)  A parent asked about the procedure for getting school sidewalks and bus stops cleared of snow if they have not been.  A discussion ensued about the privatization/outsourcing of groundskeeping.

(7)  Dr. Garcia-Blocker requested parents to participate in a collaborative group exploring how grading is done (and honors are awarded) throughout the district.  Interested parents can attend a meeting at Cross High School on Jan. 30 from 3 to 4:30.  Please send an email to Dolores.Garcia-Blocker@new-haven.k12.ct.us.

(8)  Superintendent Harries spoke briefly about making the decisions to close or dismiss school early for bad weather.  He also briefly discussed the technology grant the district has won, and how classroom technology will be needed for Common Core.

(9)  A Hillhouse parent asked that training be offered to Board of Ed office staff and parents concerning procedures in a school lock-down situation.  The topic was debated enthusiastically from every angle.

(10)  A parent asked the superintendent to look into excessive use of substitute teachers/teacher absenteeism in her school.

(11)  A member of the Title One Parent Advisory Council spoke on technology and the difficulties lower-income families have in giving their children access to technology outside of school hours.

(12)  A parent reminded those present that everychildlearns.org provides free computers and training to families who need them.

(13) A parent announced a program from United Way about Drug-Endangered Children.  A member of the State Police and a representative from DCF will offer training on Jan. 28, from 9-11 at 370 James St., Suite 403.  Register at vsaac@bhcare.org.
