A Couple of NHPS Budget Meetings Next Week

There is a public hearing on Monday, March 30 at 6:00 p.m. at Career High School to discuss the NHPS budget.  This is an important meeting as Superintendent Garth Harries will be making the case for the district's budget request.

In addition, Mayor Harp has added 4 new nursing positions to the Budget for this coming fiscal year.  Currently, there are 31 full-time nursing positions for 53 school sites serving New Haven district school students.  The city of New Haven provides funding for nurses in schools not NHPS.

The four positions will increase the nursing coverage in schools that now have a nurse less than full time.  Many New Haven schools have a nurse on site for just 2 or 3 days during the week.  It is imperative NHPS parents attend Monday's meeting to show support for the additional nurse positions and to support the school district's budget.

Talking points in support of the additional nurse positions include:
·         Every school deserves a full time nurse to attend to the health needs of the children
·         Health issues have increased over the years with more students diagnosed with asthma and allergies with orders for EpiPens on site, diabetes with insulin management along with children with daily medications for ADHD
·         More nursing coverage would allow the Principals and teachers to do their work instead of filling in when a part-time nurse is not present at school.
·         Students would miss less school, if a nurse is present to assess and manage the health issues.

Please join the upcoming hearing on Monday, March 30th at Career High School, beginning at 6:00pm.
