High School Math Team, A Message From Mr. Smith

Good evening Math Team and interested students/parents,
The first competition is coming very soon on Thursday, September 17th! This date marks the first Varsity level competition for the Greater New Haven Mathematics League (GNHML). This year, the organizers of the GNHML have combined JV and Varsity events together. While very talented middle school students may participate with the Varsity squad, because of the limited amount of spots, you will have to outperform your High School counterparts. All students are free to come practices (Thursdays from 2:15 – 3:30) and attend events, although they may not be competing officially.
The dates for these competitions are:

Event                                   Date                     Location                                            Topics
Varsity 1                             Sept. 17                Cheshire                                            See attached file
Varsity 2/JV 1                    Oct. 8                    Hillhouse                                           See attached file
Varsity 3/JV 2                    Nov. 12                Wilbur Cross                                     See attached file
Varsity 4/JV 3                    Dec. 10                 Amity                                                 See attached file
Varsity 5                             Jan. 7                    Hamden                                             See attached file

  The way this works is…
·        We will leave ESUMS together by bus.
·        The competition starts between 3:15 and 3:30.
·        Students like Owen who are not likely competing can come along for both support and practice.
·        As each round is undertaken, only a couple students are competing for credit. However, any students in attendance can still attempt each rounds questions for fun.
·        All the rounds are generally completed by around 5-5:15 when we load back on the bus and head home.
The bus trip can be a little unpredictable because we share with other New Haven schools, but this first trip should be quick as is only one other school riding with us.

Students who participate in the GNHML will also have the opportunity to try out for the national ARML competition. This is an individual distinction recognizing some of the best Mathletes in the state of Connecticut. Only ~40 students are chosen to represent the state. In this past year, Hizami Anuar earned a spot on this team and as an 8th grader! More impressive still, Hizami earned a spot on the 1st team and earned one of highest scores of the 1st team participants. Overall the CT A1 team placed 26th out of 86 teams participating from across the nation.

We plan to offer all American Mathematics Competition variants (8, 10, and 12) this year as well as providing both A and B sessions for the AMC10/12 (see below).
ESUMS will also offer students the opportunity to participate in MathCON again during the month of February. Last year we had several student perform admirably in the competition. Three students were invited to the finals in Chicago and one was an alternate to attend. In the finals, Kenny Cox gave a strong performance in the 9th grade competition and Prastik Mohanraj placed first overall in the 8th grade competition! MathCON qualifying round runs through the month of February, is computer-based, and is specific for each grade level.

Other dates to keep in mind
AMC 8 Tuesday Nov. 17th, 2015
AMC 10/12A Tuesday Feb. 2nd, 2016
AMC 10/12B Wednesday Feb. 17th

All the Best,
Mr. Smith
