ESUMS School Play Review from Malay USA

Truly amazing performances by members of ESUMS Drama Club. It was held at the University of New Haven Bucknall Theatre on June 2nd and June 3rd.
A few words or a simple sentence will not be sufficient to describe the incredibly mesmering performance by these young students. You really need to be there!
And you were there, you would've been so captivated by the show, that you didn't even realized that it was two hour long by the time it ended. It was so funny you would've laughed so hard, we all did! We are still talking about it even two days after the show.

If you didn't know any of these kids, you probably couldn't have guessed that they are actually students at Engineering and Science school. Their natural talents would've led you to think that they are students at liberal arts school. This was their second annual performance, this one being a lot better than last year (Alice vs Wonderland).
However, we were saddened and perturbed that not as many parents attended. There were about 450 students at ESUMS, so they would be at least that many parents (accounting for multiple siblings and single parents). Unfortunately not even a third of that attended. School dramas we've attended at elementary and intermediate schools in the past have a lot more attendees.
But we saw many teachers in the audiences. The principal was there too. It is comforting to know that these educators really care about the students, because they too have to pay for the tickets, and 2 hours out of they busy schedules. They didn't have to, because it wasn't during the school hours, but they did. But where are the parents? And the rest of the students??? These are your friends. If you don't support your friends who will? Granted some of you might not like dramas, perhaps you prefer sports or music, but surely you also would like your friends who like dramas to come and watch your performance during school concert bands or sports tournaments?
For those who were not able to attend, fortunately the show was videotaped, and the full-length video will be available on ESUMS website free of charge. We will provide a link when it is available. It is a must see!
We're posting several pictures we took during the performance just in case the students or their parents would like to download them.
We would also like to encourage other students to join and participate in dramas or stage shows at their schools. It would be very helpful in their future career especially if the wanted to become successful later in life, when they become managers, leaders or politicians. President Reagan was once a famous actor.
Acting will help expand and polish imagination, intelligence, passion, drive, listening skills - just to name a few.
It might also help them if they want to become actors or actresses some day. Casting agencies and directors frequently scoured through school's production when scouting for talents. Case in point, last year Aiman starred as Genie in Disney Aladdin The Musical in 5th grade at Carigan Intermediate School. Several months after that, a prominent Casting Director for New York and Los Angeles, Adrienne Stern (http://adriennestern.com/http://www.adriennestern.com/about.html) contacted the school's drama teacher looking for Aiman. There was a production director who was interested in recruiting Aiman for a series of video productions in New York City.
Great actors are not simply born with acting talent. It has been said that the definition of talent is the degree of depth of an actor's imagination and ability to enter into the imaginary world and play pretend. None of the parents of these students were actors. Even a shy Hizami starred as "Woodcutter" in Mackrille's Metaphasia during his 5th grade. Acting talent can be acquired, developed and then polished.
So hopefully more of ESUMS students will join the drama club next year. We know that Owen has expressed his interest, and perhaps his siblings too, as such Hizami might be interested as well.
Sadly, this would be the last performance by the following seniors - Khodja Sy, Mohd Sauffian, Sofia Azmal, Anisa Anuar, Vanessa Hensen-Quartey, Tyrek Cesar and Matteo McDonnell. They will be heading to college in the fall. Let's wish them the very best of luck!
