Two Scholarships for Latino Students

CONNECTICUT ASSOCIATION OF LATINO ADMINISTRATORS AND SUPERINTENDENTS

CALAS Education and Leadership Tuition Awards – 2017                      Deadline: April 1, 2017

CALAS is pleased to announce the Education Leadership Fund to promote leadership development among Hispanic/Latino college students and K-12 educators.  Our purpose is to inspire Hispanic/Latino students to graduate, teach and lead in our Connecticut schools.
NOTE:  Nominations are ONLY open to individuals from the following school districts represented in the CALAS membership (Bridgeport, CT Technical High Schools, Hamden, Hartford, Manchester, Meriden, Middletown, New Britain, New Haven, New London, Norwalk, Oxford, and Region 12.

Number of Awards: 3
·         High School Senior Award- $500.00
·         College Student Award - $750.00 and
·         Public School Educator Award - $1,500


High School Senior Award Criteria
·         Student must be of Hispanic/Latino descent
·         Attends a Connecticut public high school
·         High School is in a district represented in the CALAS membership
·         Plans to enroll in an accredited higher education institution in the fall of 2017
·         Intends to major in the field of education
·         Has a minimum GPA of 3.0
·         Is a permanent resident of Connecticut

College Student Award Criteria
·         Student must be of Hispanic/Latino descent
·         Attends an Connecticut accredited higher institution
·         Must have completed at least 30 credit hours of college coursework prior to the upcoming fall semester
·         Will maintain full-time enrollment status (12 hours) in the upcoming fall semester
·         Currently majoring in the field of education
·         Has a minimum GPA of 3.0
·         Is a permanent resident of Connecticut


Public Educator Award Criteria
·         Must be of Hispanic/Latino descent
·         Has a minimum experience of 3 years teaching in a Connecticut public school
·         Is a permanent resident of Connecticut
·         Is currently enrolled in an Educational Leadership Program
·         Must provide two letters of recommendation which highlight his/her educational leadership potential


Selection Criteria – Essay Question
The CALAS Scholarship Selection Committee will evaluate all essay entries based on content and clarity of expression.
·         High School Senior Award Essay Prompt - What does it mean to be a Latino/a in the United States at this present time?
·         College Student Award Essay Prompt – How have you or how do you plan to contribute to your community as a Latino/a?
·         Public Educator Award Essay Prompt – What has inspired you to seek a leadership position?  How do you plan to impact the Latino community?



Award Recipients will be invited to the CALAS Gala for public recognition.  Recipients will become part of a network of mentors and mentees.

CALAS Logo Student Contest 2017                                                          Deadline: April 1, 2017

CALAS is pleased to announce its Logo Student Contest which targets students in seventh to twelfth grade.  Students are asked to design a logo to exemplify the organization’s mission.  The winner will be publicly recognized and will be awarded a $250.00 gift card.

 About CALAS
The CALAS Organization serves over 120,848 students and the educators that service them. Today it is thriving to become the primary organization that supports Pre-K to 12th educators
For the Connecticut Latino Community; "Our mission is to foster quality and equitable public education for Latino Connecticut students as we seek to inspire, cultivate, develop, and support Hispanic/Latino education leaders and talent. Acting with urgency, we are committed to supporting the professional growth of Hispanic/Latino talent through professional learning and networking opportunities.”


Official Rules
The following are the official rules for the CALAS Logo Contest:
·         Students may submit up to three entries. Each entry requires a separate Entry Form.
·         All submitted work must be the original work of the student.
·         The artwork must be the creation of a single individual. Entries from pairs or teams will not be accepted.
·         Only students in a district represented by a CALAS member may enter the contest.
·         All entries will become the property of CALAS. By submitting an entry, the student agrees that the logo design becomes property of The Connecticut Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents organization.
·         The winning logo will be chosen by a panel of judges appointed by the CALAS Executive Board. Their decision will be final.
·         The CALAS Executive Board reserves the right not to select a winner if no entries satisfy the judging criteria.
·         The logo design must be created in JPG, PDF, or PSD formats. If you are chosen as a winner, you MUST be able to provide a high resolution vector file (e.g., in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, or InDesign).
·         A completed Entry Form and logo design must be submitted to Lillian.Fontan@gmail.com by 11:59 PM on April 1, 2017.



Selection Criteria
The CALAS Executive Board appointed panel of judges will evaluate all entries based on the following criteria:
·         Relevance - the entry should be consistent with the CALAS mission.
·         Originality - the entry should be creative, innovative, and the original work of the student entering the contest.
·         Aesthetic Quality - the entry should command attention, display visual balance and color coordination, and contain elements which work together for a unified and appealing design.

The design should:
·         Capture the excitement and professional strength of our Latino Community
·         Reflect CALAS’ mission
·         Incorporate the organization’s name (Connecticut Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents or CALAS acronym are both accepted) and the Connecticut state bird, American Robin, in flight


Prizes
The winner will be publicly recognized at the CALAS Gala 2017 on Saturday, May 6, 2017 and will be awarded a $250 reward in the form of a gift card.  The winner will receive a framed copy of the logo design. *CALAS reserves the right not to select a winner, if in its sole discretion, no suitable entries are received.
