ESUMS 7th Grader Aiman Anuar Wins MathCounts Countdown Round

Aiman was the winner of the countdown round during the Mathcounts Outreach competition held at Yale University on May 2,2017.  The Engineering and Science University Magnet School (ESUMS) won 2nd place team.

The competition consisted of several written components that challenge individual students and teams to solve complex, multi-step problems with and without the aid of a calculator. The top students then participate in the Countdown Round, a fast-paced, one-on-one oral competition similar to “Jeopardy.”  This competition is open only to middle school students grade 6, 7 & 8 from the New Haven Public School (NHPS) system, but top performers go on to represent New Haven at the state level.

In March of this year, Aiman qualified for Raytheon Mathcounts Connecticut State competition. Although he did not win any prizes, he received the highest score of all the public school participants.

This Mathcounts Outreach was its 11th annual competition for students from over 20 New Haven Public Schools (NHPS). The competition caps months of hard work on the part of over 300 New Haven middle school students who have been flexing their mathematical muscles under the guidance of over 30 Yale student coaches.

MATHCOUNTS Outreach was formed in 2006 by MATHCOUNTS “alumni” and other Yale students interested in volunteering in the community. MATHCOUNTS Outreach is a collaboration involving Yale undergraduates, the NHPS math department, the Connecticut Society of Professional Engineers and the MATHCOUNTS Foundation. Yale student coaches work alongside NHPS math teachers to coordinate and run practice sessions. The competition is co-sponsored by MATHCOUNTS Outreach and Yale’s Office of New Haven and State Affairs.
