On Tuesday, April 24th we are having our next PTO Meeting following the school's Town Hall Meeting. 

The Town Hall runs from 5:30 - 6:15 and the PTO Meeting starts at 6:30. Babysitting will be available for both events, and we will be serving a light dinner at the PTO meeting.

Another Free Coding Class

CodeBoola: A Coding "Learnathon" for High School Students SATURDAY, APRIL 14, 8:30AM-4:30PM 17 HILLHOUSE AVENUE OPEN TO HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS REGISTER CodeBoola is a free, one-day “learnathon” for high school students held by the YHack team, which organizes the annual Yale hackathon. During the day, students will participate in a series of workshops tailored for their experience level and taught by current Yale students, focusing on web design, programming, and entrepreneurship. Through these workshops, students are introduced to computer science concepts, build upon their teamwork skills, and gain fundamentals towards a STEM-based education. Why do some folks live to be 120 years old without developing cancer, while others develop cancer during childhood? You would think immortality is a good thing, but not when it leads to cancer. At Science on Saturday March 31, come listen to Professor Sandy Chang (Yale Pathology) tell us about how telomeres, the structures at the end of your chromosomes, link aging and cancer.

Science Saturdays is an award-winning lecture series designed for families that brings the excitement of research and the passion of scientists to the community. Each event involves a lecture by a Yale professor and an hour of hands-on science demonstrations run by Yale students. This weekend will feature an inflatable planetarium! Bring the whole family! Refreshments will be served. Free parking is available at the Sachem-Prospect Garage on Prospect Street. Entrance to the garage is in the Yale Ingalls Ice Rink lot.

is proud to host its

5^th Annual STEM Exposition on Thursday, March 26, 2018 from 4:00pm to 6:00pm

We invite you to come judge our student's innovative projects as they develop skills for living in a Highly Technological, Knowledge-Based Society.

    ESUMS’ STEM Exposition is Project-Based Learning at its finest. Students are challenged to solve highly complex problems applying both fundamental skills (reading, writing, and math) with 21st century skills (teamwork, research gathering and time management) utilizing high tech tools. With this combination of skills, students become managers of their learning process, guided and mentored by a skilled teacher.

    Each year, competing teams respond to a given challenge; the 2018 theme is “A Closer Look”. We invite you, along with other industry professionals, to judge our innovative projects in six content areas: Biology, Chemistry, Entrepreneurship, Mobile App Design, and 3D Modeling. Judges will grade teams on the six critical 21st Century Skills—Information Literacy, Creativity and Innovation, Collaboration, Problem Solving, Communication and Responsible Citizenship. Team websites will be available for review on March 1st.  The group with the highest aggregate score in each category will move on to compete against 40 other Connecticut high schools at the Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, CT on May 19, 2018.

Snapshot of ESUMS Engineering Classes

Good morning parents!

It has been a very hectic week and students and teachers are about to go on a very well-deserved break. I wanted to let you know a few things going on in our classes as well as where we are headed when we return to school on February 26^th.

IED: In IED, we have reviewed multiple things over the past two weeks. We started doing 3D modeling using the Autodesk Inventor software, and students are enjoying creating 3D models from sketches and seeing them in action both via 3D printing, laser cutting, and assembly. We also have gone over mathematical modeling as well as motion in one dimension. We returned to the shop for 1 class this week to begin making the crankshaft assembly for their Automata boxes, and yesterday students began brainstorming ideas for what they can put on their boxes that can move in conjunction with their crankshafts and cams that they will be designing.

After the break we are going to learn some more in-depth 3D modeling strategies as well as area, volume, and density topics. We will ultimately conclude the 3^rd marking period with some more Shop time and hopefully we will share with you a video of all the students’ projects when they are complete (and yes they will be able to take them home when they are done next month!).

POE: In our POE class, we have – after some fun assembling and constructing – been working with VEX Testbeds and some elementary programming topics. Students have had 3 to 4 class periods with these test beds and while some have finished the necessary programming, others have some work that needs to be done. Note that the programming pieces can be done in a regular text file so if students want to get those in over the break they can do so. After the break, we are going to have a quiz on Fluid Power and Robotics concepts and then dive headfirst into Statics, Mechanics, and some other very tricky concepts. We are hard at work supporting our POE students in this class and making it as entertaining and informative as we can.

CSP: In our CSP class, students have been studying the Internet and how web sites and web servers operate. Students created a Virtual machine that they use for 2 assignments (and will use for 3 more after the break) that went over concepts like IP addresses, packet transmission, and more. The past 2 classes we did an Encryption project that the students absolutely loved. It was fun to see the messages that students posted as well as those sent to each other. Ask your students about RSA encryption and quiz them on their understanding!

After the break we are going to study Javascript, PHP, and MySQL databases. We are heading towards another great project with our Capture the Flag tournament as well!

I hope that you have a refreshing break and that your child also has a chance to unwind and enjoy their time off. We will see you again February 26^th!

Important: Board of Education Meetings are Moving to Celantano School

Good Morning, we would like to inform all parents, staff and community collaborators that beginning on Monday February 12th 2018, all NHPS Board Meetings will be held at Celentano Magnet School Cafeteria/Auditorium.  The school is located at 400 Canner Street, New Haven, CT.  The meetings will continue to be held at 5:30 p.m., during the second and fourth Monday of every month. 

Tonight's Open House Rescheduled

Due to inclement weather, tonight's Open House/Parent Information session for prospective students has been rescheduled for Monday, Feb. 26th (3PM-4PM). We look forward to seeing you then!
