CROY (Cancer Research Opportunities for Youth) is a new initiative from the Yale Cancer Center meant to provide young people from the local community with hands-on experience, mentoring, and collaboration within the cancer research pipeline. To qualify for this program, you must be 16 when the program begins, you must be willing to commit to working two summers of research at the Cancer Center, and you must identify with a group that is underrepresented in cancer research. In general, this refers to individuals who are Hispanic/Latino, Black or African American. However, other students may also qualify for this program.

The program will provide aspiring young scientists from the New Haven community an opportunity to embed themselves within research teams engaged in all aspects of cancer research over the course of 2 summers. Eligible students will be matched with research teams working in projects related to Cancer Immunology, Cancer Prevention and Control, Developmental Therapeutics, Genomics, Genetics and Epigenetics, Radiobiology and Radiotherapy, or Viral and Other Infection-associated Cancers.

You will have the opportunity to learn about cancer research, develop research skills, and be mentored by some of the best cancer researchers in the world. This is a unique opportunity to take advantage of a world class research institution in your own backyard!

High School Physics Students, Summer Camp Deadline March 31

Perimeter Institute summer physics camp in Ontario, $500 for two weeks residential, very competitive, due March 31.

ESUMS Wins MathCON Divisional Round -- Atlantic Region

Congratulations to Aiman Anuar, Hizami Anuar, Prastik Mohanraj, Tirth Patel & Kenneth C. of ESUMS for their amazing results in the MathCON 2017 Atlantic Region round. They are Champions for the divisional round and qualify to to compete at the MathCON 2017 Chicago Finals.

Aiman ranked #2 for 7th Grade in the Atlantic Region. Hizami ranked #2 for 10th Grade. Prastick ranked #1 for 10th Grade. Tirth ranked #1 for 11th Grade, whereas Kenneth ranked #17.

Finalists are the top 576 students out of 49,685 contestants nationwide. MathCON National Finals will be held at the University of Illinois in Chicago on Saturday, April 22, 2017.

Absolutely phenomenal results by these ESUMS students! ESUMS or Engineering and Science University Magnet School was recently awarded Top High School for Exemplary STEM Education Programs by The National Future of Education Technology Conference (FETC) and earned a Finalist Award for the Middle School Category.

During last year's National MathCON competition in Chicago, Hizami won Silver Medal, whereas Prastik won National Championship. It was the second consecutive year for Prastik.

Last Call -- No PTO Meeting Today!

In case you missed the Parent Link message from the office, there will be NO meeting today.  We canceled it for mini-expo and parent tours, and although those have been moved to March 30, we will not meet.  The building is still in too much of a ruckus from moving.

Please note that parent tours will be offered after Expo on March 30th, as well as from 2:30-3:30 on March 20th.  The March 20th tours are by appointment with the office.

The student government is organizing this year's Pi Day celebration, and they are requesting pies and supplies from the PTO.  We already have plenty of paper plates and napkins thanks to parent donations, but they would also like some pies!

Pies can be sent in with students on March 13, and refrigeration will be available.  No nuts, please, but homemade and store-bought pies are both welcome.

Mini-Expo Postponed to March 30

It was a little ambitious to think we could hold a large event after only a week in a new building!  Due to some moving-related delays, Mini-Expo is postponed to March 30th, 4-6 pm.  Parent tours should be held afterwards, but we're still awaiting confirmation of that.

Another Fundraiser

Greetings ESUMS parents,
We will again be holding a Mixed Bag Designs fundraiser.  The sales can begin immediately and will close on March 3.  This will give you plenty of time to view the online catalogs and sell to family and friends during the February break.  This is a win-win fundraiser in that the school will profit 40% from all sales and you will be purchasing items that can be reused for years.  The bags are very sturdy and excellent for shopping, travel, the beach and more.                                                       
Please don't hesitate to reply with any questions you might have. 
I have attached the order form and website information.  If you wish to have a catalog packet please let me know and I will send one home with your child.
Please do not include Tax or Shipping fees if you are sending the order w/payment to school for us to process!

A Message from Kristal Rivera at Girl Scouts of CT

I would like the parents to know that Girl Scouts would like to start a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) troop at ESUMS. In order to start the troop we need two adult volunteers over the age of 18 to be troop leaders. The good thing about being a troop leader is that the volunteer would be making the schedule. They can meet with the girls once a month for an hour or more then that if they would like. The leaders can also hold the meetings in another community location such as a local library or organization. If they have any questions they can contact me directly via phone or email. Remember, each label earns 10 cents for ESUMS - 10 Labels equals $1.00. Please see the attached list for the products that offer these valuable labels.

If every student  in the school is able to submit 10 labels, we would be able to earn over $600 for supplies at ESUMS.

Thank you to all who participated!  That is $12,600 we can spend on activities, clubs, field trips, dances, and other special items not covered by the school's budget.  Great job everyone!!  

PTO Meeting 10/18, followed by Future of NHPS Town Hall

The PTO Meeting for October 18 (at 5 pm in the art room) will be a short but important one.

We will vote on funding requests from teachers.  This is how we decide how to spend the money raised at the Walkathon, and we want you to be involved!  Immediately after the meeting, we will travel to Career High School to participate in a Town Hall meeting about choosing the next superintendent as well as an interim superintendent for this year.  Register here.

If you would like to have a say in these important matters, make sure you are there!

Chess Movie in Local Theaters This Week

Living in the slum of Katwe in Kampala, Uganda, is a constant struggle for 10-year-old Phiona (Madina Nalwanga) and her family. Her world changes one day when she meets Robert Katende (David Oyelowo) at a missionary program. Katenda coaches soccer and teaches children to play chess. Curious, Phiona approaches and learns the game. She becomes fascinated with it and soon becomes a top player under Katende's guidance. Over several years, her success in competitions and tournaments leads to greater competitions, stress and identity issues. Phiona must learn more than the game as she is exposed to life outside Katwe. Her education, both formally and informally, continues as she dreams of escaping a life of poverty for herself, her mother and her siblings.
