ESUMS 7th Grader Aiman Anuar Wins MathCounts Countdown Round

Aiman was the winner of the countdown round during the Mathcounts Outreach competition held at Yale University on May 2,2017.  The Engineering and Science University Magnet School (ESUMS) won 2nd place team.

The competition consisted of several written components that challenge individual students and teams to solve complex, multi-step problems with and without the aid of a calculator. The top students then participate in the Countdown Round, a fast-paced, one-on-one oral competition similar to “Jeopardy.”  This competition is open only to middle school students grade 6, 7 & 8 from the New Haven Public School (NHPS) system, but top performers go on to represent New Haven at the state level.

Panel Discussion: Do Red-Lining and Race Affect School Funding?

The answer is yes.

When it comes to Connecticut’s education funding formula, there are often more questions than answers, and a lot of these questions deal with race and economics. If you are looking for a space to ask questions about racial disparities in funding and work with teachers and local experts to find solutions, you should come to our next education panel on Tuesday, May 30.

Join E4E for a panel entitled "Unequal Opportunity: The Racial Crisis with School Funding."

Come for a panel discussion with other educators and experts in housing, education, and funding.

Panelists:
Billy Johnson, Director of Instruction, New Haven Public Schools
Karen DuBois-Walton, Executive Director, New Haven Housing Authority
Genevieve Walker, Director of Programs, Connecticut Center for Arts and Technology

This provocative conversation about the racial disparities in inequitable school funding is sure to be informative and engaging. So bring your questions and thoughts to this discussion with leaders in education and learn about the effort to forge a more equitable future for your students.

See you there,
E4E-CT

A Message from the Tech Department

                                                                                                                                    May 15, 2017
Dear Families,
It’s ExpoFest time!!
ESUMS will have seven teams competing against other CT schools.  Teams will set up their interactive exhibitions at the Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, CT to display and pitch their work to the public. Each project will be assessed by a panel of judges comprised of business professionals, higher-education faculty, and experts in the realms of science, technology and business.
Over 40 Connecticut high schools participating in Skills21 programs will be celebrating a year’s work of innovation, creativity, and imagination on Saturday, May 20, 2017, at the Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, CT. The Student Innovation ExpoFest is the culminating event for more than 2,000 middle and high school students engaged in cutting edge science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and digital arts and media education programs.
NO CHILD WILL BE ABLE TO ATTEND EXPOFEST WITHOUT A SIGNED PERMISSION SLIP.  Students that ride the bus in the morning must return to ESUMS on the bus.  If a student wishes to leave the Oakdale Theatre, the parent must sign the student out with their teacher so we can keep an accurate head count.
The schedule for EXPOFest is as follows:
6:30a    Students meet at ESUMS to board and load buses to Toyota Oakdale Theater
7:00a    Doors open at Oakdale
9:00a    Opening Ceremony - FAMILY & FRIENDS ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND!!
            Trade Floor open and Presentations
1:30p    The Big Pitch on Center Stage
2:00p    Awards Ceremony
3:00p    Buses leave
4:00p    Students return to ESUMS
Students must wear their team EXPO polo shirt in conjunction with the dress casual bottoms that will be determined by the individual groups and their teachers. Students should wear comfortable dress shoes (no sneakers) and be pressed and ready to shine.
Box lunches will be provided courtesy of Education Connection.  If students are interested, concession stand items will also be available for purchase.
Attending EXPOFest is free, so get out that spiritwear and come cheer on our students as they present their projects and compete against other CT schools.
Looking forward to seeing you at EXPOFest!!

Last Call -- No PTO Meeting Today!

In case you missed the Parent Link message from the office, there will be NO meeting today.  We canceled it for mini-expo and parent tours, and although those have been moved to March 30, we will not meet.  The building is still in too much of a ruckus from moving.

Please note that parent tours will be offered after Expo on March 30th, as well as from 2:30-3:30 on March 20th.  The March 20th tours are by appointment with the office.

The next PTO meeting is April 4th at 5 pm.  See you there!

A Message from Guidance for Seniors

We give students hands-on, real work experiences that enrich their academics and prepare them for the future. Whether youre looking for a co-op position full or part time, or searching for summer employment, DTE Energy offers a rewarding opportunity for students to contribute to projects that truly matter.

Student Co-Ops
There are three terms per year that typically mimic the standard school schedule. The terms are:
  • Winter Term (January - May)
  • Summer Term (May - September)
  • Fall Term (September - December)

Please Send in Pies for Pi Day!

The student government is organizing this year's Pi Day celebration, and they are requesting pies and supplies from the PTO.  We already have plenty of paper plates and napkins thanks to parent donations, but they would also like some pies!

Pies can be sent in with students on March 13, and refrigeration will be available.  No nuts, please, but homemade and store-bought pies are both welcome.

Mini-Expo Postponed to March 30

It was a little ambitious to think we could hold a large event after only a week in a new building!  Due to some moving-related delays, Mini-Expo is postponed to March 30th, 4-6 pm.  Parent tours should be held afterwards, but we're still awaiting confirmation of that.

Another Fundraiser

Greetings ESUMS parents,
We will again be holding a Mixed Bag Designs fundraiser.  The sales can begin immediately and will close on March 3.  This will give you plenty of time to view the online catalogs and sell to family and friends during the February break.  This is a win-win fundraiser in that the school will profit 40% from all sales and you will be purchasing items that can be reused for years.  The bags are very sturdy and excellent for shopping, travel, the beach and more.
Please don't hesitate to reply with any questions you might have.
I have attached the order form and website information.  If you wish to have a catalog packet please let me know and I will send one home with your child.
Please do not include Tax or Shipping fees if you are sending the order w/payment to school for us to process!
Thank you for participating - funds raised help offset the cost of bus fees for some field trips!

Important Message from Guidance about Tracking Community Service Hours

Hello Students!
All community service hours must now be documented in a website called servo.city.  If you have already put community service hours into x2vol in Naviance, those hours have transferred over to servo.city.  Ask your counselor if you need assistance!

Dec. 9 -- High School Coronation Dance -- Snack Request

As you may know, the high school is throwing a big dance on Friday, December 9th, and they are looking for donations of snacks and small paper cups.  Please send your donation into the office next week.  If anyone would like to volunteer to attend the dance and keep the drink coolers refilled, please contact Alice Coleman (address above).

An Important Request -- Please Help!

Good Morning ESUMS Parents:

On Monday evening, one of our students experienced a tragedy wherein they lost everything in an apartment complex fire.  I am writing to see if anyone can donate clothes, toiletries, socks, etc..to the family.  They need clothes in sizes 2x, large and small for men and 1x or extra large for women.  Donations can be dropped off at ESUMS' main office and we will deliver to the family.

Thank you for your kindness and generosity.

Some Local News of Interest

Some bad news (Wilbur Cross graffiti, article includes a letter from Superintendent Dr. Mayo) and some good news (ESUMS high school students interviewed).

A Message from Kristal Rivera at Girl Scouts of CT

I would like the parents to know that Girl Scouts would like to start a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) troop at ESUMS. In order to start the troop we need two adult volunteers over the age of 18 to be troop leaders. The good thing about being a troop leader is that the volunteer would be making the schedule. They can meet with the girls once a month for an hour or more then that if they would like. The leaders can also hold the meetings in another community location such as a local library or organization. If they have any questions they can contact me directly via phone or email. My phone number is 203-239-2922 and my email address is krivera@gsofct.org.
