NHPS (Free) Summer Program -- Aspirations for Higher Learning

The Aspirations for Higher Learning Pre-Collegiate Institute, a 6-week intensive academic initiative of the New Haven Public Schools’ will begin its 21^st consecutive year on July 1, 2016.  The program will operate on the campuses of Yale University and Southern Connecticut State University.  All New Haven area high school students may apply.  We seek students who want a challenge for the summer of 2016.  

The primary goal of the ‘Aspirations’ program is to strengthen academic skills and to prepare students to succeed in college.

Code Boola is a one day “learnathon” for high school students held at Yale. Students participate in workshops taught by current Yale students, focusing on web design, programming, and entrepreneurship. April 8 -- ESUMS Community Spring Cleaning

Let's get together after school on April 8th to spring-clean our school building and improve our students' learning environment!

Meet at the school at 2:00.  Please bring some cleaning supplies.

We will be able to attempt some small repairs (e.g., put hook locks on bathroom stall doors), so if you are handy, bring your tools.

Students will get volunteer hours for helping out.    Teachers can send requests for cleaning priorities to the PTO -- esumspto@gmail.com.

We can work together to care for our students, teachers, and the place where they spend so much time!

EXPO 2016

ESUMS will be participating in the annual year end competition known as ExpoFest.  

The 2016 theme is “Empathy by Design”. ESUMS will have six teams competing against other CT schools.  Teams will set up their interactive exhibitions at the Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, CT to display and pitch their work to the public. Each project will be assessed by a panel of judges comprised of business professionals, higher-education faculty, and experts in the realm of science, technology and business.

Over 40 Connecticut high schools participating in Skills21 programs will be celebrating a year’s work of innovation, creativity, and imagination on Saturday, May 14, 2016, at the Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, CT. The Student Innovation ExpoFest is the culminating event for more than 2,000 middle and high school students engaged in cutting edge science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) and digital arts and media education programs.  This is the students’ chance to shine!  Participation in Expo looks favorable on a college application and could help to distinguish your child from other applicants.

Student attendance for ExpoFest is mandatory for all “winning” student groups from Mini EXPO.  We will have teams representing Chemistry, Biology, Physics, 3D Modeling, eCommerce and Mobile App Design.  The level of the students’ participation and verbally displayed project knowledge will represent a significant portion of their 4th quarter grade. Students are expected to be present in the ESUMS parking lot on May 14th at 7:00 am to setup their booths, and they will return to the school between 4 & 4:30 pm after disassembling their booths and cleaning up their exhibition space.

Students must wear an EXPO polo shirt with an embroidered custom logo representing their group in conjunction with the dress casual bottoms that will be determined by the individual groups and their teachers. The order form for the shirts is attached and the cost is $30. The shirts will be dress code compliant and have been approved by administration for school use. The order forms and the $30 cash is due to Melissa Manzione by the April 5th. No late orders will be accepted.

** Attention Biology Students

If your child is participating in EXPO, on May 14th, they must bring in $30.00 by April 5th for their shirt. To participate, students must be able to stay after school one day a week (Tuesday,Wednesday, or Thursday), every week, until May 14, 2016.

Report card conference is April 28 from 5-7pm.  It will be an early dismissal day.  5-7pm open conferences.

April 27 will be an early dismissal with afternoon conferences by appointment.

Interested ESUMS students can contact Alec Andrulat at robotics@newhaven.edu for details.  Students will check in with Alec when they arrive at UNH.

They can arrive at The David Beckerman Recreation Center (marked on the attached map) on the main campus on Friday, 2/12 from 3:00pm-8pm to help with setup. They do not need to be there the whole time. 

Staff will be there from 3:00pm to 8:00 PM to work on setup. 

In addition we need help 7:30 AM to 5 PM on  Saturday, 2/13/16. They can take shifts or come for all or part of the time. Friday is most important time for helping us and will allow the team to compete and volunteer.

Fall Principal's Report to the PTO

New Haven Board of Education Meeting Monday, Dec. 14, at 5:30, Martinez School, 100 James St.

UPDATE: The agenda confirms the superintendent's contract extension will be considered at this meeting.

Meetings of the Board of Education are an opportunity for teachers, students, families, and community members to witness and participate in the decision-making about our schools.  Monday will be the final New Haven Board of Education meeting of 2015.  Though the agenda is not usually published until Sunday night, it seems likely two key issues will be discussed:

1. The vote to extend the current superintendent's contract is being considered before the end of 2015.  As next Monday's meeting is the final one of the year, the decision may be announced then.  Some object that such a significant decision should not be made with a Board of Education that is currently in transition.  If this concern resonates with you, you can read and sign this petition to postpone that vote until next month.

2. The Board of Education is currently in transition and is dealing with an issue that was made public last month: our BoE has 8 voting members, while the charter only allows for 7.  This was discussed at the previous Board of Education meeting where a proposal to keep all 8 voting members was announced.  One of the newly-elected BoE members, Darnell Goldson, wrote this op-ed raising concerns about the proposal to allow 8 voting members and disregarding the charter's referendum that legally only allows for 7 members.  The vote on this decision will happen at next Monday's BoE meeting.

Both of these issues will have an impact on the leadership of the school district and Board of Education.  You can attend the Board of Education meeting on Monday, December 14, 2015 @ 5:30PM at John S. Martinez School (100 James Street).

There are many ways to get involved, which range from acting as a juror, bailiff, or clerk to arguing the side of the defendant or prosecutor as a youth attorney. Each role plays a different but key role in the courthouse. All high school volunteers will be trained by a professional attorney and will have access to older mentors who have gone through our program. The Project Youth Court team will email you with more information about volunteer training after you have submitted the form.

This Morning is a Math Morning!

Kelly Delp (Cornell): What can you make using cellular automata?
Suppose we have a line of boxes, each with two possible states, black or white. A 1-dimensional cellular automaton is a simple set of rules for determining how the states of these boxes change over time.  Slight changes in the rules can lead to vastly different patterns. In this talk we will look at examples of these 1-dimensional (and possibly 2-dimensional) automata and see how mathematical artists use them in beadwork, knitting, and image processing.

WEST HAVEN, CONN. --- The University of New Haven (UNH) has received a grant of nearly $200,000 from the National Science Foundation to purchase a multipurpose X-ray diffractometer (XRD) system.

The instrument, which will be installed on campus next summer, will be used by faculty and students in several academic programs at UNH, including chemistry and engineering programs in the Tagliatela College of Engineering, forensic sciences in the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences and physics and environmental science in the College of Arts and Sciences.

It will also be used for programs offered by the Engineering and Science University Magnet School (ESUMS) and in collaborations UNH has with other colleges and community groups, said Daniel May, provost and senior vice president of academic affairs.

“This equipment will be a tremendous asset in training undergraduates and graduate students interested in crystallography and materials science and will provide them with hands-on, practical experiences that will benefit them in their future studies and their careers.”

Having the XRD system on campus will enable faculty at UNH to build partnerships and strengthen existing collaborations with faculty at nearby institutions, such as the Yale British Art Gallery and the New Haven Mineral Club, May said.

Obituary & Funeral Announcement for Mrs. Blue-Ellis's Father

Malcolm Henry Blue, Sr. , 73, of North Haven, born August 17, 1942 in New Haven, CT to Henry Blue and the late Joyce Perry Blue, passed away October 24, 2015 in Branford. Malcolm worked as a chef at Yale for 40 years. He was a family man who was a fan of boxing and animals. He enjoyed the music of Miles Davis, Nat King Cole and Cece Winans. He leaves to cherish his memory: beloved wife Ruby Blue of North Haven; son Malcolm (Jennifer) Blue Jr. of Bethany; daughters Mia (Joseph) Blue-Becton of North Haven, Medria (Malcolm) Blue-Ellis of Bethany and Mendi (Marcus) Blue-Paca of New Haven; father Henry Blue of Hamden; 9 grandchildren and a host of family and friends. A Celebration of His Life will take place on Friday, October 30, 2015 at 11:00 am at Church on the Rock, 95 Hamilton Street, New Haven, CT 06511 with visitation on Friday from 10-11 am at the church. Community Conversation on Education in New Haven -- Today!

A Message from Mr. Smith for Middle School Mathletes (Grades 6-8)

Here is an announcement for an upcoming math competition, The American Mathematics Competition for students in grade 8 or below (AMC8)

On November 17th ESUMS will be offering the AMC8. Here are the bullet point details:

•  This competitive exam is open only to students in grades up to and including 8^th grade.

•  There is no cost to participate.

•  The exam will likely be given during the school day, or if not it will commence immediately following school.

•  Spots are limited.

Congratulations and Thank You -- The Walkathon Achieved its Goal

The 2015 ESUMS Walkathon raised $10,817.92, funds that will pay for field trips, club activities, field day, dances, part of the college tour, academic expenses, teacher appreciation, and student fun.  This fundraiser allows the PTO to help ESUMS as much and as often as we can.  Thank you to the students, parents, teachers, and community members who participated and donated!

Practice PSAT on Oct. 7 and Real PSAT on Oct. 14

On October 7, all 10^th and 11^th grade students will be taking a practice PSAT to prepare them for the real PSAT that will be given on October 14 at ESUMS.  More detailed information regarding the PSAT exam is below but it is very important to note that these scores will be used by the College Before College Program to determine which students qualify to take college courses next year.    

Science Club, Tuesdays

Science Club meetings will be a little different this year.  They will be on Tuesdays in Mr. Rush's room, but you only have to attend one in-person meeting a month.  The other three Tuesday meetings will be conducted via Edmodo (code: i29ka6).   This will resolve some schedule conflicts with other after school clubs.
