Board of Education Meeting

***Due to poor weather conditions the BOE Special Meeting for 2-2-15 has been cancelled.***

The New Haven Board of Education will hold a Special Meeting at 5:30 on 2-2-15 to approve the Action Items that were previously scheduled for the meeting of January 26, 2015 which was cancelled due to poor weather conditions. CRISP High School Research Fellowship

Google Summer & Scholarship Programs
Computer Science Summer Institute (CSSI) is a three-week introduction to computer science for graduating high school seniors with a passion for technology—especially students from historically underrepresented groups in the field. 

The Generation Google Scholarship for high school seniors helps aspiring computer scientists excel in technology and become leaders in the field. Selected students will receive 10,000 USD (for those studying in the US) or 5,000 CAD (for those studying in Canada) for the 2015-2016 school year. as part of the scholarship, current high school seniors who are entering their first year of university in 2015-2016 will be required to attend CSSI in the summer of 2015.

Youth At Work

Youth at Work Application for Summer 2015 will be due April 2.

The Summer Work Based Learning Experience program is intended to provide early work experiences for young people ages 14-21 that may not otherwise have this opportunity. There are limited opportunities available, therefore please make note: completing this application does not guarantee a work experience through the program. Job placement is by a lottery system. 

High School Community Service/Volunteer Form

ESUMS high school students are required to document a certain number of volunteer hours each year.  A copy of the form is available here and on esumsnh.net.  Students should turn the forms in to the Guidance Office.

NHS Tutoring for Midterms Monday, Sign Up in the Cafeteria Tomorrow Morning

The ESUMS chapter of the National Honors Society would like to announce to its fellow pupils that on Monday, January 12th, ESUMS will be holding a "Reading Day" to benefit its students. Throughout the day, there will be various study sessions focusing on either particular subjects or on general study skills. These sessions are meant to help you with preparing for midterms and/or with any general subject matter from your classes. Students who are interested can sign up for sessions in the morning in the cafeteria, but more importantly, they must also get permission from whichever teacher they are supposed to be with during the respective period.

Registration will still occur on Tuesday, Jan 20th.

Greetings ESUMS families
Every day next week, January 12 - 16 all students will be dismissed from ESUMS due to high school mid term exams.  All students will be dismissed at 11:30 and there will be no after school programs scheduled for the week unless you are contacted by the teacher. A few teachers may choose to keep their programs on the schedule which would require students to be picked up between 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. depending on the program.

Please be sure you help your child's success by encouraging and supporting good eating and sleep habits.

The following is the high school mid term exam schedule:
7:45 - 9:30 the first exam will be given
9:40 - 11:25 the second exam will be given.
Students will not be allowed to enter the classroom late so please be sure to have all students at school by 7:30 each day.  We thank you for your support and wish each and every child success as we end the second semester.

International Festival of Arts & Ideas Student Fellowships

The International Festival of Arts & Ideas is excited to be recruiting for our 2015 Fellowship Program. We are looking to choose 10 New Haven students to participate in a semester long after school seminar, one day a week, up until the Festival in June where they will be immersed in Festival events. Students will write about, discuss, and experience many different types of art. They also will learn about how non-profit organizations like the IFAI put together hundreds of performances in one town for a jam packed two week experience. Fellowship Students will be able to experience 30+ Festival events for FREE. At the end of the Fellowship Program students who have fulfilled their duties as a fellow will receive a $500 stipend and will have made countless connections with the Festival’s professional staff, Board of Directors, and the many artists who grace New Haven for two weeks every year!

Students must be in 10th or 11th grade and must be eligible for free or reduced lunch.

Point-In-Time Count Volunteers Needed (Regional Alliance to Prevent & End Homelessness)

Greater New Haven Opening Doors Needs Your Help!

On Wednesday, January 28, 2015 (inclement weather date is Thurs, Jan. 29th) from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m., Greater New Haven Opening Doors will be leading community volunteers from across the region in The Annual Point-In-Time (PIT) Count of the region's homeless. This count is very important because it provides needed data for federal and state funding used to house and maintain stable housing for our region's homeless. Volunteers will be assigned to a 4 person team for a 3 hour shift (7:00-10:00 pm) to walk and/or drive around in designated New Haven neighborhoods administering the PIT “Street” Count survey to individuals and families experiencing homelessness. Each volunteer team will be led by a knowledgeable homelessness service provider. All volunteers must attend a 1 hour orientation (5:30-6:30 pm the night of the PIT Count) to learn about a volunteer’s basic duties, the point-in-time count method, how to approach an individual, and how to obtain necessary information for the count. The PIT Count volunteer orientation will be held at First Presbyterian Church in New Haven in the Owens Community Building., 704 Whitney Avenue. HPREP Program (Health Professionals Recruitment and Exposure Program)

Hello 10th grade and 11th grade parents and students:
Below please find information regarding the HPREP program.
  • HPREP is a nationwide high school science enrichment program aimed at recruiting African-American, Native American, and Latino high school students into careers in the sciences and health professions. Each year over 30 New Haven high school students attend eight Saturday sessions run by Yale University minority medical students. Students participate in small group discussions on various health topics within medicine and public health. A special emphasis is placed on health issues disproportionately affecting minority communities.
  • Application deadline 11/24/14.  Student may need a letter of recommendation which they should ask for now. The more time they give their teachers, the better!
  • Past parent reports that there were students who traveled from Greenwich, Easton, Danbury, Farmington etc. They had difficulties finding local kids to attend.

    What's a "Coffee And"?

    Tomorrow morning will be the first "Coffee And" of the year.   Coffee And is coffee with a light breakfast (usually just doughnuts) and conversation.  Parents whose schedules conflict with evening PTO meetings have a morning opportunity to catch up on PTO business and chat with faculty members or administrators in search of doughnuts.  It's less structured than a PTO meeting, so more casual and interesting conversations are possible.

    Online Resource for A.P. Students

    MIT OpenCourseware has started a program to help high school students prepare for the A.P. exams in Chemistry, Physics, Calculus and Biology.

    International Potluck

    It's short notice, but the new Multicultural Club would like to add an International Potluck Dinner to the PTO meeting and Town Hall scheduled for Tuesday, October 7.  Please make the effort to participate -- you'll get a great dinner on a busy evening!




    Walkathon Thank You (But It's Not Over Yet)

    The first round of Walkathon donations has been tallied and the result so far is good: more than last year, but we still aren't near the $10,000 fundraising goal.

    The school has agreed to extend the donation deadline to October 17 and will make online donation an option via the school webpage (esumsnh.net) in a few days.

    Please keep raising contributions so we can fund great activities at ESUMS this year.  Thank you so much for all you have raised so far!

    "Hello ESUMS walkathon volunteer parents!

    We would like to remind everyone of our students' walkathon on October 2, 2014 at Rochford Park in Hamden.   So the way the walkathon goes -- there will be two waves.  HighSchool students will participate in the first wave, approximately 8am-10am.   They will return for lunch served at the school.    The Middleschool students will participate from 10a-1230pm which will allow for a 30 minutes lunch break.  

    For those who pledged to donate snacks and gallons of water,  please bring them to the office tomorrow or on October 2 at the field.

    The Coding Club will hold an informational meeting on Monday, Oct. 6, 2-3 pm in Ms. Manzione's Mr. Pinsker's room, and will meet regularly on Mondays thereafter.  Please join us!
