New Haven Board of Education Meeting Monday, Dec. 14, at 5:30, Martinez School, 100 James St.
UPDATE: The agenda confirms the superintendent's contract extension will be considered at this meeting.
Meetings of the Board of Education are an opportunity for teachers, students, families, and community members to witness and participate in the decision-making about our schools. Monday will be the final New Haven Board of Education meeting of 2015. Though the agenda is not usually published until Sunday night, it seems likely two key issues will be discussed:
Meetings of the Board of Education are an opportunity for teachers, students, families, and community members to witness and participate in the decision-making about our schools. Monday will be the final New Haven Board of Education meeting of 2015. Though the agenda is not usually published until Sunday night, it seems likely two key issues will be discussed:
1. The vote to extend the current superintendent's contract is being considered before the end of 2015. As next Monday's meeting is the final one of the year, the decision may be announced then. Some object that such a significant decision should not be made with a Board of Education that is currently in transition. If this concern resonates with you, you can read and sign this petition to postpone that vote until next month.
2. The Board of Education is currently in transition and is dealing with an issue that was made public last month: our BoE has 8 voting members, while the charter only allows for 7. This was discussed at the previous Board of Education meeting where a proposal to keep all 8 voting members was announced. One of the newly-elected BoE members, Darnell Goldson, wrote this op-ed raising concerns about the proposal to allow 8 voting members and disregarding the charter's referendum that legally only allows for 7 members. The vote on this decision will happen at next Monday's BoE meeting.
Both of these issues will have an impact on the leadership of the school district and Board of Education. You can attend the Board of Education meeting on Monday, December 14, 2015 @ 5:30PM at John S. Martinez School (100 James Street).

There are many ways to get involved, which range from acting as a juror, bailiff, or clerk to arguing the side of the defendant or prosecutor as a youth attorney. Each role plays a different but key role in the courthouse. All high school volunteers will be trained by a professional attorney and will have access to older mentors who have gone through our program. This Morning is a Math Morning!
Sun, November 1, Davies Auditorium, 10 Hillhouse Avenue:
Kelly Delp (Cornell): What can you make using cellular automata?
Suppose we have a line of boxes, each with two possible states, black or white. A 1-dimensional cellular automaton is a simple set of rules for determining how the states of these boxes change over time. Slight changes in the rules can lead to vastly different patterns. In this talk we will look at examples of these 1-dimensional (and possibly 2-dimensional) automata and see how mathematical artists use them in beadwork, knitting, and image processing.
(Sorry for the late notice; this looks like a good one!)

A Multipurpose X-ray Diffractometer? Start Planning Some Projects!
WEST HAVEN, CONN. --- The University of New Haven (UNH) has received a grant of nearly $200,000 from the National Science Foundation to purchase a multipurpose X-ray diffractometer (XRD) system.
The instrument, which will be installed on campus next summer, will be used by faculty and students in several academic programs at UNH, including chemistry and engineering programs in the Tagliatela College of Engineering, forensic sciences in the Henry C. Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences and physics and environmental science in the College of Arts and Sciences.
It will also be used for programs offered by the Engineering and Science University Magnet School (ESUMS) and in collaborations UNH has with other colleges and community groups, said Daniel May, provost and senior vice president of academic affairs.
“This equipment will be a tremendous asset in training undergraduates and graduate students interested in crystallography and materials science and will provide them with hands-on, practical experiences that will benefit them in their future studies and their careers.”
Having the XRD system on campus will enable faculty at UNH to build partnerships and strengthen existing collaborations with faculty at nearby institutions, such as the Yale British Art Gallery and the New Haven Mineral Club, May said.

A Gentle Reminder About that Driveway . . .
The direction of the one-way driveway remains changed, even in the rain. It's very dangerous for your kids to walk among the buses if you try to drive down the side to drop them off closer to the doors. Also note that students with injuries can ring the front doorbell and come in by the office, rather than walk all the way around.
Donate Your Old CD Players to the 7th Grade!
The 7th grade language arts classes are in need of CD players and headphones. Since you've certainly moved all of your music to digital formats, perhaps you can spare a CD player or headset. Join KidsBuild This Fall!
KidsBuild is a club that puts ESUMS students in touch with the development of their new building. Students already involved with the program have seen many phases of the design process, from paper sketches to blueprints to political obstacles to, finally, a school well into the building phase. With graduating seniors there are some spots available for participation in the KidsBuild program.
If one of your children has their eyes set on Architecture, Civil Engineering, or Construction, please contact Mr. Smith (hunter.smith@nhboe.net) to express interest in participating. At minimum there will be a Fall and Spring site visit occurring after school. During these outings we meet with the program sponsors Svigals + Partners Architects and Fusco Construction Management to discuss advances on the site since our prior visit as well as future work that will be seen soon.
The Fall trip will likely be on either October 20th or 27th (both Tuesdays), however this needs to be confirmed with the program partners. Spots are very limited, so please send an email quickly!

Coding Club -- First Meeting 9/21
The Coding Club will meet on Monday after school, 2:10-3:10, in Mr. Pinsker's room.
No computer programming background is required. New students will learn the basics of the python programming language. Returning students will review, act as teaching assistants, and advance using online tutorials. A laptop is not essential, but students have sometimes found it convenient to keep their work all in one place and work on their programs at home.
The club has been designed for middle schoolers, but high school students who might want some extra help or practice for their computer science class are also welcome to attend regularly or just drop in as needed.

Let's Walk!
The Annual ESUMS Walkathon will be held October 1, with a rain date of October 2. Envelopes went home on Tuesday, but if your child didn't get one, please ask him or her to stop by the office. We are striving for 100% participation, so having a real envelope with your child's name and funds will allow him or her to be counted.
The Walkathon funds benefit students all year long; it is the only major fundraiser the PTO does. Funds support field trips, field day, clubs, academic activities, dances, the college trip, teacher appreciation, and many other worthwhile school functions. When you donate -- or help your child to request sponsorship from friends, neighbors, family members, and local businesses -- remember that you will not be asked to sell cookie dough and wrapping paper(at least not by the PTO!).
Our goal is for each student to raise at least $25. Prizes will be awarded on the day of the Walkathon. Parent chaperones and snack donations on the day of the event would also be most welcome. Prize donations (gift cards, tickets, etc.) would also be gratefully received. Thank you!

Orientation Tomorrow!
School Orientations will be held in the school cafeteria tomorrow. Please take this opportunity to come by and say "hello" to the new PTO officers and sign up to help out during the school year.
Tomorrow would also be a good time to visit the school uniform exchange. Most of the gently used uniform pieces available are smaller (middle school) sizes because kids grow out of them.
Donations of used -- or even new -- larger, high-school-size uniforms would be most welcome! Uniforms from the uniform exchange are also used to provide an outfit when students come to school out of dress code.
The uniform exchange could also use some care -- volunteers to wash, iron, and fold some of the items. Please speak to Teresa or Anna in the main office if you can take on this task.

The Details On Project Lead-the-Way Credit
Dear Parents and Students
in Project Lead The Way Courses:
We hope you are
experiencing a rewarding school year, and feel that the pre-engineering courses
through Project Lead the Way (PLTW) have been beneficial. There is no better time
than right now to contemplate a career in STEM areas as there are many more
jobs in the United States than qualified people to fill them.
Since your child
attends a PLTW-certified school, she/he can get a head start on engineering-related
career and add prestige to their college admissions applications by receiving
college credit from University of New Haven (UNH).
